چکیده

Articulatory patterns of the lateral approximant /1/, both dark and light allophones, in American English were analyzed through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and electropalatography (EPG). Vocal tract lengths, area functions, and cavity volumes, were measured from the MR images, while EPG data were used for studying interand intra-speaker variabilities in lingua-palatal contact patterns. Acoustic modeling was based on the MRI-derived vocal-tract area functions and the acoustic spectra of these sounds. Acoustic modeling utilized the analog circuit simulator HSPICE.

Toward articulatory-acoustic models for liquid approximants based on MRI and EPG data. Part I. The laterals.

Magnetic resonance images of the vocal tract during the sustained phonation of /l/ (both dark and light allophones) by four native American English talkers are employed for measuring lengths, area functions, and cavity volumes and for the analysis of 3-D vocal tract and tongue shapes. Electropalatography contact profiles are used for studying inter- and intra-talker variabilities and as a sourc...

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels

This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...

An Mri-based Articulatory and Acoustic Study of American English Liquid Sounds /r/ and /l/

Title of dissertation: AN MRI-BASED ARTICULATORY AND ACOUSTIC STUDY OF AMERICAN ENGLISH LIQUID SOUNDS /R/ AND /L/ Xinhui Zhou, 2009 Dissertation directed by: Professor Carol Y. Espy-Wilson Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering In American English, liquid sounds /r/ and /l/ are the most articulatorily variable and complex sounds. They can be produced by several distinct types of tong...

Acoustic modeling of american English lateral approximants

A vocal tract model for an American English /l/ production with lateral channels and a supralingual side branch has been developed. Acoustic modeling of an /l/ production using MRIderived vocal tract dimensions shows that both the lateral channels and the supralingual side branch contribute to the production of zeros in the F3 to F5 frequency range, thereby resulting in pole-zero clusters aroun...

A modeling investigation of articulatory variability and acoustic stability during American English Õ.Õ production

This paper investigates the functional relationship between articulatory variability and stability of acoustic cues during American English /./ production. The analysis of articulatory movement data on seven subjects shows that the extent of intrasubject articulatory variability along any given articulatory direction is strongly and inversely related to a measure of acoustic stability ~the exte...
